Check out this wonderful ceramic console bowl by French artist Gilbert Portanier (b. 1926),
well-known French ceramicist, sculptor, painter and illustrator
.  This post-modern piece is about 10.25" D x 8.5" H.  It is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, fleabites or crazing (see photos).  It is signed

on the bottom.
When I found myself with a brush in front of the naked earthenware, I was paralyzed, clumsy, helpless.
Abstract painting requires absolute mastery of its line and its means;
I needed figuration to take guarantees on the mysterious and changing material of the enamel which cut me off from all my basic references.
The figuration provided me with marks of authenticity.
Now it is the opposite: if I draw an arabesque on the earthenware it is immediately alive;
on a canvas it seems free and dead to me.
